and finding the venue for 'service' opportunities - which loosely translates (for non-Rotarians) into free labour. It was good to have something to do that felt as though we were helping to accomplish something. The organizers of "Stop Hunger Now" were just getting organized - and we helped them out with that. Here are a few pics showing our work labelling and taping boxes that will later be filled with dried food packets - rice, beans, vitamins etc. Each bag holds six servings, each box holds six bags. Apparently these boxes will stay in Australia for local needs.
The session concluded with 180 flags of the world - all countries represented by or with projects organized by Rotary. Here's a familiar flag; all flags presented by the Surf Rescuers of Australia.
We left our boxes and made our way to the second opening plenary session to hear PM Tony Abbott (actually a recording made at the first opening plenary session) announce that the Australian government has committed $100 million Aus dollars to End Polio Now. That got some applause!
Aboriginal dance group as part of the opening session.
Some great entertainment by the Australian foursome Human Nature - perfoming Motown. They have a permanent gig in Vegas but came home to perform for Rotary.
As you can imagine, once the session was over, a LOT of people needed that train to Central station. Happily, Destiny and I are young enough to run - so we had a bit of an advantage even though our seating meant that we were among the last to get out of the Stadium. We just squeezed on to the first train out of the station. And no Rotarians were injured along the way ;).

Great pictures, good to see you are keeping fed and busy. Amazing seats for the opening ceremony.
ReplyDeleteHope the train service kept up with the 15,000 + Rotarians all trying to make the plenary session at the last minute this morning!
Perhaps you started late as we did in Lisbon last year.
Take care.
