I can't actually remember when I first heard about the Camino de Santiago, that pilgrimage across northern Spain that dates back to the Middle Ages. Not more than 10 years ago, but more than 5. The idea of walking nearly 500 miles in search of some kind of religious absolution, some assurance of a sweeter afterlife made me think about all of the things people do. And can do. I can't speak to the afterlife, or the efficacy of reaching the church in Santiago where the bones of Saint James are reputed to be interred. Did it change the lives (or afterlife) of pilgrims hundreds of years ago? Would it change mine?
A few months ago Bill and I watched the Emilio Estevez movie The Way, a modern look at what the pilgrimage has become in this century. My curiosity and interest in the art and history of the Camino was further piqued. Bill started to tell people I was going. I always really hate it when he does that, because then I feel as though my dreams are out there and I really have to make good on them. In June, I booked a single return flight for September 18, 2013 from Edmonton to Madrid, returning on October 7. It wouldn't be enough time to do the whole Camino, but I plan on starting and seeing what happens along the way. Maybe two days on the trail will be enough. Maybe I'll end up in some seaside villa for the majority of my trip. I guess that's part of the adventure. Follow along if you're curious about what might transpire ...
Let the journey begin.
