Power and a Split Second of Fame - in the Twitterverse

We are getting settled into a bit of a convention routine here now.  Deciphering the schedule for each day, working out when and where we need to be places.  Whether we should take in things together, or maximize our information gathering power by splitting up.  Oh, yes, a lot of thought goes into these daily operations meetings!

And speaking of daily operations, the Sydney transit system has been absolutely remarkable.  We've rarely waited more than moments for our train and yesterday we added buses and a ferry to our modes of travel - all seamless and lovely.  This entire city recognizes the convention badges and certainly doors open and smiles are all around.

One of our rides on Monday - The Golden Grove ferry.

Once we've arrived at our venue we've been lucky to have a seat - as I hear that at some conventions this isn't the case.  Yesterday we heard famous Austrailian cricketer Brett Lee talk about his Mewsic program for kids in India, and heard about the toilet projects (Google Mr. Toilet, Jack Sim).

I attended a breakout session led by Jennifer Jones of Windsor, Ontario called What Is Rotary?  The session's objective was to help Rotarians develop their own 'elevator speech' that adequately captures Rotary in both broad strokes and specifics.

We were encouraged to be tweeting and otherwise taking advantage of social media using the hashtags #whatisrotary and #ricon14.  While I am not a Twitter expert, I am developing more facility with the medium.  And, I am proud to say, a couple of my tweets were re-tweeted by Rotary International.  So everyone in the world who follows Rotary International on Twitter (and I am explaining this for the many non-tweeters reading this) will now be reading what I had to say (in 140 characters or less).  There was also, just a very brief moment, where the twitterfeed was projected onto the big screens and TWO of my tweets appeared!  I know, I am not being very Rotarian tooting my own tweeter horn.  Forgive me ;).  But I do encourage all of the Twitter folk to check out the #ricon14 hashtag and follow some of the interesting things that are happening.

We scampered out of our breakout sessions and ran (we do a lot of running, surprisingly) back to our hotel to put on long pants and grab a sweater for our special event at the Taronga Zoo!  That deserves a post all its own.
